Media Advisory - Unions to seek investigation into missing government revenue

Coalition to call on Auditor General for answers

EDMONTON, Feb. 16 /CNW/ - A coalition of unions will tomorrow (Thursday, February 17th) call on the Alberta Auditor General to investigate why billions of dollars in revenue from non-renewable resource extraction have gone missing.

"Alberta Energy sets a target for how much it collects from resources companies in exchange for the right to develop publicly-owned energy resources. But the government has failed to meet its own target almost every year," says Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL), which represents 140,000 workers. "The province is missing out on billions of dollars in revenue that it should be collecting."

Tomorrow, union leaders including McGowan will release a letter that the coalition is sending to Auditor General Merwan Saher requesting a probe into the missing billions. The coalition is also asking why Alberta Energy has not followed up on recommendations made by the Auditor General after his audit of the Ministry in 2006-2007.

As the province braces for a controversial budget next week, the unions are demanding answers why the government of the richest province in Canada is mishandling revenue collection so badly that it is missing its own targets and is considering more cuts to the vital services that Albertans demand and deserve.
