Media advisory - Two-Year Countdown to Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games

    VANCOUVER, March 10 /CNW/ - The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the
2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) will celebrate the two-year
countdown to the Paralympic Winter Games on March 12 with activities in
Vancouver and Whistler.

                              Summary of Events
                                March 12, 2008

    City celebration:
    Paralympic School Day with Queen Victoria Annex School and media access
    Time:      9:00 am to 11:30 am
    Location:  Trout Lake Community Centre, 3350 Victoria Drive,
               Vancouver, BC.

    The VANOC Paralympic Planning team and Paralympic gold medalist Todd
Nicholson (ice sledge hockey) will join students and staff of Queen Victoria
Annex school for a presentation on the Paralympic Games and sport
demonstrations (ice sledge hockey, wheelchair curling, sit-skiing). The team
will be joined by the Vancouver 2010 mascots, led by Paralympic mascot, Sumi.
Media are invited to both participate in and cover this exciting and
interactive workshop that teaches children the values of the Paralympic

Queen Victoria Annex school and the media. The event will include media
availability with Todd Nicholson and Cathy Priestner Allinger, executive vice
president, Sport and Games Operations.

    Mountain celebration:
    Two years to go Paralympic Winter Games celebration - Whistler
    Time:      3:30 pm to 6:30 pm
    Location:  Whistler Public Library

    The Paralympic Winter Games countdown event takes place at the new
Whistler Public Library on March 12 from 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm, with the
ceremonial countdown cake cutting at 5:30 pm. The countdown will feature
athletes, music, refreshments, the Vancouver 2010 mascots and the new
Vancouver 2010 video showcasing the Paralympic Winter Games.
    As the Paralympic Movement continues to build momentum, the March 12
celebration in Whistler is an opportunity to showcase some remarkable,
inspiring achievements by Canadians with a disability. The event will include
folk/pop singer/songwriter and 2008 Canadian Indie Awards nominee, Justin
Hines, along with remarks by local athletes including Tyler Mosher (Paralympic
cross-country skiing) and Donovan Tildesley (2004 Paralympian, swimming).

    A new video featuring the extraordinary athletes of the Paralympic Winter
Games will inspire all Canadians to strive for excellence. The video will be
released for screening through streaming web-based video at This video will help change perceptions of Paralympic
sport, showcasing the tremendous talent of the athletes and promoting the
Vancouver 2010 platform of "small town spirit, big city facilities,
world-class exposure."
