TORONTO, Oct. 22 /CNW/ - A meeting is scheduled for this Thursday,
October 23 at 2:30 pm in Room 163 at Queen's Park with Labour Minister Peter
Fonseca and Catherine Swift, president of the Canadian Federation of
Independent Business (CFIB).
Swift will be delivering 25,000 fax responses from CFIB members who are
in strong opposition to the Minister's announcement late last week that the
government intends to enact legislation on mandatory WSIB coverage of
independent operators and other individuals.
According to Swift, CFIB research shows that small construction
companies, which already pay for their employees' WSIB coverage, will face an
average additional $11,000 per year cost in premiums even though many purchase
full insurance coverage elsewhere.
"We don't believe this Minister did his homework," said Swift, "and he
certainly didn't follow the example of his predecessors by consulting
extensively with business groups to get a better understanding of the
implications of such a wrong-headed policy. On behalf of our members I intend
not only to deliver the faxes but my own message when and if he holds to
meeting with us on Thursday."
Swift will be joined at the meeting by Judith Andrew, CFIB's vice
president of legislative affairs for Ontario and Satinder Chera, the
Federation's director of provincial affairs, Ontario.
