PENTICTON, BC, July 10 /CNW/ - The opposite of a "Grand Opening", another
"Grand Closing" event will take place on Friday, this time at Canwood
Furniture Inc. to mark the plant's permanent closure.
The event starts at 12:15 p.m. Media and the public are welcome.
In the last year, more than 13,000 forest industry jobs have been lost in
the province, while more than 50 BC wood processing plants have closed since
2001. The Canwood event is one in a series of 'grand closings' over the last
few months, marking the loss of jobs and the impact on local economies of the
forestry and manufacturing crisis.
Canwood has been acquired by Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., which has
massive manufacturing facilities in Asia.
Speakers will include BC NDP Leader Carole James; United Steelworkers
(USW) District 3 Assistant to the Director Carol Landry; USW local 1-423
President Bruce Gardner; Canwood's USW unit chairperson John Campbell and CUPE
BC General Vice President Bev LaPointe.
The USW is Canada's most diverse union, representing more than 280,000
men and women working in every sector of the economy.
