Media Advisory - St. John week salutes top citizens at key events in Ottawa

    OTTAWA, June 16 /CNW Telbec/ - In celebration of 126 years of helping
Canadians, St. John Ambulance salutes exceptional community-minded Canadians
in series of special events. Media are invited to attend:
    Thursday June 18, 2009  6:00 - 8:00 pm   Volunteer Appreciation Reception
    Royal Canadian Air Force Mess            158 Gloucester Street, Ottawa

    Storyline - 13 (thirteen) volunteers from across Canada will receive
special awards (Chancellor's Commendation, Priory Vote of Thanks) in
recognition for their outstanding service to the Priory of Canada (operating
as St. John Ambulance Canada).

    Saturday June 20        11:00 - 11:30 am Service of Remembrance Ceremony
    National War Memorial                    Confederation Square, Ottawa

    Storyline - RCMP Commissioner, Commissioner for the Yukon Territory,
Canadian Forces Surgeon General, Ministry of Veterans Affairs representative,
Voluntary Aid Detachment Veterans, Afghanistan mission CF personnel and Lord
Prior (UK) honour those who have served Canada in overseas missions since
1914. Music, prayers, addresses, laying of wreaths. Approx 150 in attendance.

    Saturday June 20        2:00 - 3:00 pm    National Investiture Ceremony
    Senate Chamber, Parliament Hill           Media Pass required

    Storyline - The Lord Prior of the Order of St. John(*) invests 30
outstanding Canadians and presents the Gold Life Saving Medal of the Order to
3 Canadians. Held in regal Senate Chamber with pageantry and aplomb. 250+ in
attendance. Photography and video coverage available. ((*)Order of St. John is
one of five national Orders in the Canadian Honours System which also includes
the Order of Canada, Order of Military Merit, Order of Merit of the Police
Forces and the Royal Victorian Order.)

    West Block, Parliament Hill                Development Fund
                                               Media Pass required
    Storyline - Eric Barry (former Lord Prior) highlights new International
Development Fund established in his name for St. John volunteers who work in
developing countries, specifically southern African countries. Most recently,
St. John Volunteers responded to Zimbabwe cholera crisis by setting up three
rehydration centres. Donations to the Fund, equipped volunteers with medicine,
protective clothing and food.
