HAMILTON, ON, June 26 /CNW/ - On Thursday June 28th 2007 the members and
employees of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Hamilton Niagara Regional
Detachment will be welcoming the RCMP Deputy Commissioner Bourduas and local
dignitaries to the official opening of the new detachment location.
When: Thursday June 28th, 2007
1000 hrs (10 am)
Where: 777 Hwy No. 8
Stoney Creek, Ontario
The RCMP amalgamated its administrative and core program lines in the
Hamilton Niagara Region in 1996 in order to reduce duplication and improve
efficiencies, while maintaining office locations in downtown Hamilton and
Niagara on the Lake. In 2005 Public Works Government Services Canada and the
RCMP Property Management division selected the former Stoney Creek City Hall
as the site for its new office. This location would see the physical
amalgamation of the two existing detachments which would thereby provide a
stronger resource base to draw upon in targeting its federally mandated
priorities in the area of Organized Crime, Economic Crime and Terrorism.
Renovations to the City of Hamilton owned building began in October 2006 and
occupancy was available by May, 2007. This new office is collocated with the
Hamilton Municipal offices, Hamilton Library and the Hamilton Police Services
Community Policing office.
"This move has been in the works for quite some time, so we are all
excited it is here," said Detachment Commander Inspector Gil Carlson." The new
detachment has been operational since Thursday May 17, 2007 but we are looking
forward to the official launch on Thursday."
"This new location will not change any of our operations and we look
forward to continuing to work with our valued law enforcement and community
partners in the region," said A/Commr. Michel Séguin, Commanding Officer of
the RCMP in Ontario. "You may not see our uniform on the street every day but
trust that we are here working hard to ensure safe homes and safe communities
in this region."
The RCMP first opened a detachment in the Niagara Falls area in 1920
consisting of three members. Another detachment was opened in Hamilton in 1921
with one member. Today, this new office in Stoney Creek will consist of
approximately 107 employees working in the federal policing sections of Drugs,
Commercial Crime, Customs & Excise, Federal Enforcement, Integrated Proceeds
of Crime, National Ports Enforcement Team, Aboriginal Policing Liaison, Drug
Awareness, Informatics, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and a
Criminal Intelligence Section.
The detachment serves the cities of Hamilton, Niagara, St. Catherine's,
Welland and Brantford as well as the Regional Municipalities of
Haldimand-Norfolk, Hamilton-Wentworth and Niagara; and the County of Brant.
Following the official opening and refreshments, at 1330 hours Deputy
Commissioner Bourduas will be hosting an Awards Ceremony for 24 RCMP employees
at the new office.
