MONTREAL, June 18 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Paediatric Society's 84th
Annual Conference-June 26-30 in Montreal, Que.-will showcase the latest
research and developments in child and youth health. More than 700
paediatricians and other child and youth health professionals from across
Canada are expected to attend.
The program includes 147 scientific abstracts in areas such as adolescent
medicine, international child health, neonatology/perinatology,
developmental/behavioural paediatrics, injury prevention, emergency
paediatrics and infectious diseases.
The conference features:
- A keynote address by Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs
of a Boy Soldier. Beah's extraordinary book recounts his story of growing up
in war-torn Sierra Leone and at age twelve fleeing attacking rebels and
eventually becoming a child soldier. He now lives in New York City, is a
member of the Human Rights Watch, has spoken before the United Nations and
advocates for the rights of children. He will speak during the opening
ceremonies 1000-1130 on Wednesday, June 27.
- Workshops and plenary sessions that provide in-depth information about
current child and youth health issues. Topics include child and youth
maltreatment, poverty in our cities, aggression in children, diabetes care and
adolescent substance abuse.
- A children's book drive in support of literacy programs throughout the
Montreal area. Books will be donated to the Literacy Foundation's The Gift of
Reading program, which helps brings books to underprivileged children in
Quebec. Books will be donated during the CPS Luncheon, Saturday, June 30.
