Media Advisory - Health Council of Canada holds panel discussion on sustainable health care

    TORONTO, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - The Health Council of Canada is gathering a panel
of experts from across Canada to help the Council construct a framework to
identify the determinants of a sustainable health care system that is
universally accessible, publicly-funded and publicly administered. The panel
meets on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Sutton Place Hotel,
995 Bay St., Toronto.
    Media are invited to attend the panel and meet one-on-one with panelists
and/or Councillors from 2:30 to 3 p.m. The panel discussion is part of the
Health Council of Canada's regular meeting in Toronto Feb. 4 to 6.

    The panel, which will be moderated by Mr. Steven Lewis, the Health
Council's non-government representative from Saskatchewan, brings together
experts in health care management, operations and planning, public policy,
government, health economics, bioethics and information management:

    -   Dr. Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown, Assistant Deputy Minister and Lead of
        Information Management, Health System Strategy Division, Ontario
        Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
    -   Ms. Cheryl Doiron, Deputy Minister of Health, Nova Scotia Department
        of Health
    -   Dr. Bob Evans, Associate Director, Senior Faculty, Centre for Health
        Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) University of British Columbia
    -   Mr. Dan Florizone, Chief Executive Officer of Five Hills Regional
        Health Authority (SK), and Chair of the Health Quality Council of
    -   Dr. Jennifer Gibson, Director of Partnerships and Strategy at the
        Joint Centre for Bioethics, University of Toronto, and Coordinator
        for the Canadian Priority Setting Research Network (CPSRN)
    -   Dr. Carolyn Hughes Tuohy, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and
        Senior Fellow, School of Public Policy and Governance, University of

    The framework, combined with additional research and consultation, will
eventually be used to produce a working paper for the Health Council to
support the pursuit of a sustainable and high-performing health care system.


    The Health Council of Canada, created by the 2003 First Ministers' Accord
on Health Care Renewal, is mandated to monitor and report on the progress of
health care renewal in Canada. The 26 Councillors were appointed by the
participating provinces, territories and the Government of Canada and have
expertise and broad experience in community care, Aboriginal health, nursing,
health education and administration, finance, medicine and pharmacy.
