Media Advisory - Governor General to participate in ceremonial coin strike to mark centennial of the Royal Canadian Mint

    Dedication of time capsule to also be held during open house celebration

    OTTAWA, Sept. 10 /CNW Telbec/ - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable
Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will
attend a coin-striking ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the Royal
Canadian Mint.
    Media representatives are invited to attend this ceremony, which will be
held in the same historic building where the Mint was founded 100 years ago,
when Governor General Earl Grey minted the country's first domestically
produced coin, a 50-cent piece. Repeating Earl Grey's gesture to commemorate
this historical event, the Governor General will then deliver a speech to Mint
alumni and employees, who will be gathered for a special open house centennial
    Media representatives are also encouraged to attend the time capsule
dedication ceremony which will take place at 6:00 p.m. Showcasing the
craftsmanship for which the Mint is known throughout the world and filled with
items and keepsakes contributed by employees, the time capsule will be sealed
and permanently displayed at the Mint.
