Media Advisory - First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Children and Youth: Time to Act

OTTAWA, Sept. 11 /CNW Telbec/ - The National Council of Welfare (NCW)
will launch its report First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Children and Youth:
Time to Act on September 18, 2007, 11:00 a.m., at the Thunderbird House,
715 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Chairperson Dr. John Rook from Calgary,
member David Welsh from Ottawa and former member Josie Hill from Winnipeg will
be available to take questions at an event that includes representatives of
Aboriginal organizations, other organizations working for children, social
development and an end to poverty.
The report, developed by the NCW in cooperation with Aboriginal
individuals and organizations, provides a portrait of Aboriginal peoples from
the perspective of the communities and the social connections upon which
children and youth depend. It combines statistics with the voices of
influential Aboriginal people the Council interviewed, to give true meaning to
the numbers.
This report was written: to show solidarity with Aboriginal demands for
action; to help Canadians better understand and support needed changes; to
bring to light ways in which Aboriginal people are working to improve the
quality of life for the next generations, and; to urge government to act
without delay, with bold and innovative solutions, to give poverty-stricken
Aboriginal children and youth a decent chance in life.
The report and press release will be available at
at 9:00 a.m. September 18 (Ottawa time). NB: Embargoed copies will be
available to interested media as of September 13 at 2 p.m. by contacting
Claudette Mann at or (613) 957-2961.
