Media Advisory - EQAO to Launch the Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition Program Celebrating Exceptional School Communities Throughout Ontario

    TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - In anticipation of Education Week (May 4-8),
the media is invited to attend the EQAO tribute to Dr. Stephenson followed by
the inaugural presentation of the Dr. Bette Stephenson Recognition of
Achievement to two Ontario schools.

    WHEN:      Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 5:30 p.m. (EDT)
               Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. (EDT)

    WHERE:     The Faculty Club at the University of Toronto, 41 Willcocks
               Street, Toronto (two streets north of College Street, east of
               Spadina Avenue)

    SPEAKERS:  The Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Education;
               Dave Cooke, Member, EQAO Board of Directors and former
               Minister of Education;
               Duncan Green, Former Director of the Toronto Board of
               Education and former Assistant Deputy Minister of Education;
               Brian Desbiens, Chair, EQAO Board of Directors; and
               Marguerite Jackson, CEO, EQAO.

    SCHOOLS:   Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton and Ecole élémentaire
               publique Le Coeur du Nord in Kapuskasing.

    Every year, EQAO will present the Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of
Achievement to school communities whose collective efforts have resulted in
noteworthy student achievement as demonstrated by EQAO provincial assessment
results that have improved or been maintained at high levels.
    In anticipation of Education Week (May 4-8), the EQAO Board of Directors
is pleased to establish this program in honour of Dr. Stephenson's lifelong
commitment to Ontario's publicly funded education system and her dedication to
public service. As minister of both Education and Colleges and Universities
from 1978 to 1985, Dr. Stephenson made an enormous contribution to public
education, and she continues to play a vital role as Director Emeritus at EQAO
and in leadership positions at several organizations involved in education and
