Media Advisory - City of Toronto and Ireland Park Foundation to open new waterfront park honouring Irish famine victims

TORONTO, June 19 /CNW/ - Mayor David Miller will join the President of
Ireland, Mary McAleese, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, Federal Finance
Minister Jim Flaherty, and the Chairman of the Ireland Park Foundation, Robert
G. Kearns, for the official opening of Ireland Park on Thursday, June 21.

    Date: Thursday, June 21
    Time: 2 p.m. - official ceremonies
Location: Ireland Park, intersection of Queen's Quay and
                    Bathurst St.

Ireland Park is located on Toronto's waterfront at the foot of Bathurst
St., just west of Reese's Wharf where the immigrants landed. The park was
designed to be an emotional and evocative place calling up long-lost memories
of destitute ancestors who arrived from blight ravaged Ireland on our Canadian
shore with hopes for a new life in a new land. The park features oak trees, a
cylinder of stacked glass that serves as a beacon of hope and five bronze
sculptures created by renowned Irish sculptor Rowan Gillespie. The Ireland
Park Foundation led the design and fundraising for the park.
