Media Advisory - City of Pickering Takes Centre Stage at Canada Blooms

PICKERING, ON, March 11 /CNW/ - In recognition of its victory in
Communities in Bloom, the City of Pickering will be showcased at the annual
Canada Blooms festival, the highlight of which will be a live performance by
the award-winning Backwoods Players theatre group.
Canada Blooms is the largest event of its kind in Canada, and draws over
100,000 visitors over the course of the festival. Pickering hopes many of
these visitors will have the opportunity to visit its Communities in Bloom
booth and stay for "A Spirit Walk" - the Backwoods Players' theatre
production, which vividly recreates the story of Pickering's early settlers
and their ill-fated participation in the Rebellion of 1837.
In 2007, the City of Pickering was a first time participant in
Communities in Bloom and was awarded Five-Blooms - the highest possible
rating. As part of its winning entry, Pickering was able to weave together the
past and present with an underlying theme of community in large part through
the active participation of the Backwoods Players.

"Pickering is an award-winning city, and I am very proud that we were
selected as one of the showcase municipalities for this year's Canada Blooms
festival," said Mayor Dave Ryan. "Our participation in this high-profile event
will promote our city to thousands of event goers and validates our growing
reputation as one of the very best places in Canada to call home."
"Our success in the Communities in Bloom program was due to the
unwavering community spirit that defines Pickering - as recreated in A Spirit
Walk," said Regional Councillor, Ward 1, Bill McLean. "Communities in Bloom is
not just about plants and flowers. It's about partnerships and working
together to achieve a common goal."
