Media advisory - Cheema Aquatic Club to Host a Send Off Celebration for Olympians Karen Furneaux and Csom Latorovski - Members of the Canadian Olympic Canoe Kayak Team for Beijing Olympic Games - Interview and photo opportunities

    WAVERLEY, NS, July 25 /CNW/ - Cheema Aquatic Club will be hosting an
event to celebrate the success of three members before they head to the
Beijing 2008 Olympic Games: Karen Furneaux (athlete), Laszlo (Csom) Latorovski
(coach) and Frank Garner (Chief Official).

    Karen Furneaux

    Karen is a veteran of the Canadian Canoe Kayak team and Beijing will be
her third Olympic Games. She finished 5th in the K-2 500m event in Sydney and
8th in the K-4 500m event in Athens. She had one of her best years in 2005,
finishing on the podium 3 times at the World Championships - 2nd in the K-1
500m and third in both the K-1 200m and K-1 1000m. She was rewarded for her
achievements by being selected as a finalist for Canadian Female Athlete of
the Year at the 2005 Canadian Sport Awards. More recently, Karen finished 6th
in the K-1 1,000m at the 2007 World Championships.

    Laszlo (Csom) Latorovski

    He was christened Laszlo but his friends call him Csom. Born in Hungary,
but now living in Waverley, Nova Scotia, Csom is the Canadian National Women's
Kayak Coach and the Head Coach of the National Sport Centre - Atlantic Canada.
    Csom was the Head Coach of Cheema for many years before becoming the Head
Coach of the Canadian Canoe Kayak team at the 1999 Junior World Championships
in Zagreb, Croatia. Among others, he coached Karen Furneaux to several World
Cup titles in singles events. He was part of the Canadian coaching staff at
the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. Csom will be Canada's National Women's
Kayak Coach at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

    Frank Garner

    Frank was a nationally and internationally ranked canoeist in Mississauga
before moving to Nova Scotia and becoming Cheema's first Head Coach. He was
Head Coach at the 1984 Olympic Games and is now the Chief Official for the
International Canoe Federation and has officiated at the 2000 and 2004 Games.

    All three of our Olympians call Waverley home.

    The celebration of our Olympians will be held at the Cheema Aquatic Club
on Friday August 1, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.
