TORONTO, July 16 /CNW/ - The CAW Ontario Health Care Council Executive
Board unanimously endorsed the candidacy of Ken Lewenza for the position of
national president and Peter Kennedy for the position of national
secretary-treasurer, during the most recent meeting of the board on July 15.
"Ken Lewenza and Peter Kennedy have both been long-time advocates of
health care workers in this province, and it is with great pleasure that their
candidacy for national president and secretary-treasurer be unanimously
endorsed by the council executive," said Shawn Rouse, council president.
Over the years CAW leadership has worked tirelessly to raise the work
standards for health care workers, and help bring their issues to the public's
attention, said council Vice-President Barb Maki, who moved the motion to
endorse both Lewenza and Kennedy. "Both candidates have shown a willingness to
continue the support for health care workers in this province, and we wish
them success in their election bids."
The CAW represents over 20,000 health care workers in the province of
Ontario in a variety of workplaces, including acute and chronic care public
hospitals, homes for the aged, nursing homes and retirement homes, as well as
ambulance services and other community-based health and social services
The CAW Ontario Health Care Council is the voice of CAW health care
members in Ontario. The council advocates for the improvement of working
conditions for the province's health care workers and the promotion of quality
universal public health care. The council also coordinates campaigns in the
health care sector and facilitates dialogue on health care issues between
local unions and members within the union.
