Media Advisory - Canadian Olympians To Tee It Up In Support Of The Mark Lowry Memorial Sport Excellence Fund

    OTTAWA, June 22 /CNW/ - On Monday, June 25, the Lowry family and the
Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) will host the second annual Drive for the
Podium Golf Tournament, presented by Bell Canada, in support of the Mark Lowry
Memorial Sport Excellence Fund at the Stonebridge Golf & Country Club in
    The Fund is a tribute to Lowry, the COC's former Director of Sport, and
is designed to help high-performance athletes and coaches achieve podium
success at the Olympic Games.
    The competition will feature participation and appearances by some of
Canada's most recognized Olympians including Alex Baumann (swimming), Sue
Holloway (kayak and cross-country skiing), Emily Brydon (alpine skiing),
Jennifer Button (swimming), Mike McWha (swimming), Jennifer Robinson (figure
skating) and Helen Upperton (bobsleigh).
    Included in the day's festivities are 18 holes of golf, Olympic-themed
demonstrations, a silent auction and dinner at the Stonebridge clubhouse. CBC
Sports' Scott Russell will serve as the tournament's emcee and host.
    The Mark Lowry Memorial Sport Excellence Fund was established by the
Lowry family and the COC in October 2005. The Fund is managed by the COC on
the family's behalf.
    Mark was passionate about the sporting community and worked tirelessly to
advance the cause of athletes and sport in Canada. His lasting legacy will be
the successes of the many athletes and coaches who have benefited and will
benefit from the high-performance programs, including Own The Podium 2010,
which he helped to create. He passed away on October 21, 2005 following a
two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

    Time:        The Opening Ceremony featuring athlete introductions is
                 scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The shotgun start is set for
                 12:45 p.m.

    Photo-Ops: Members of the Lowry family; Olympic athletes and COC

    fencing, canoe/kayak, table tennis, biathlon and rowing) by Canadian
    Olympic hopefuls.
