MONCTON, NB, June 12 /CNW/ - New Brunswick's 39 separate ambulance
operators will now be transitioned to a single province-wide system following
completion of contract negotiations between the New Brunswick Department of
Health and Medavie Blue Cross.
The 10-year performance-based contract has been negotiated between
Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB), the company established by the Department of
Health to provide land and air ambulance service throughout the province, and
New Brunswick EMS Inc. (NB EMS), created by Medavie Blue Cross to run the
provincial ambulance system.
"Our government is very pleased to have at its disposal the experience of
Medavie Blue Cross in the daily operation of our provincial ambulance
service," said Health Minister Michael Murphy. "Medavie's Nova Scotia
subsidiary has gained considerable experience operating the ambulance system
in that province since 1997. This experience will help us achieve the major
enhancements we want and expect from Ambulance New Brunswick."
Negotiations began in 2006 after the Department of Health selected
Medavie Blue Cross to implement the new province-wide system.
"We're very pleased the Government of New Brunswick has placed their
confidence in us," said Medavie Blue Cross CEO Pierre-Yves Julien, "and are
confident the new system will meet the expectations of the Department and the
residents of New Brunswick."
"NB EMS is committed to high-quality pre-hospital care for New
Brunswickers, and patient care will be our top priority as we transition to
the province-wide system," added George McLellan, President of Medavie EMS,
parent company of NB EMS.
Mr. McLellan said NB EMS will begin immediately to transition operators
