McGuinty Government Offers Free Nicotine Replacement Therapy

    Part Of Ontario-Funded Smoking Cessation Study To Help Smokers Quit

    OTTAWA, April 20 /CNW/ - Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson visited
a Nepean pharmacy today to promote the newest phase of the Smoking Treatment
for Ontario Patients (STOP) Study, being carried out by the Centre for
Addiction and Mental Health, which includes free nicotine replacement therapy
to help smokers quit.
    "Helping smokers quit is an essential part of the McGuinty government's
Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy," said Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson. "I
am grateful to be able to work with exceptional partners like pharmacist Maya
Najm to help improve the health of people in the Ottawa community."
    "At our pharmacy, we take great pride in assisting our community with all
of their health-related needs, including now providing access to free
assistance in smoking cessation,", comments Mrs. Najm, Pharmacist, McDaniels
Independent in Nepean. "We are all aware of the negative health effects of
smoking and by participating in this program, I look forward to giving back to
the community by helping everyone from teenagers to seniors conquer this
    In this phase of the STOP Study 72 participating pharmacists in 56
locations across Ontario will provide up to 5,000 Ontarians with five weeks of
free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) from their local participating
    The Ministry of Health Promotion has made finding effective smoking
cessation strategies a priority. The ministry's support for STOP Study shows
the government's on-going commitment to the health of Ontarians. Ontario's
tobacco consumption has fallen by 18.7 per cent or more than 2.6 billion
cigarettes since 2003. During that time, the government has increased its
investments in tobacco control six-fold to a total of $60 million, including a
$10 million increase in 2006 over the previous year.
