McGuinty Government Improving Opportunities For Small Enterprises To Do Business With Government

Implementing Recommendations Of Doing Business With Ontario Government
    Task Force

TORONTO, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship
Harinder Takhar, today updated the progress on implementing the recommended
changes to the government's procurement strategy, as part of the Doing
Business with the Ontario Government initiative.
"Small and medium-sized enterprises are important and innovative
suppliers of goods and services across the province," said Takhar. "By
implementing the recommendations of the task force we are removing the
barriers to small businesses participation in government procurement."
The Doing Business with the Ontario Government Task Force consulted with
small and medium-sized enterprises across the province to improve
opportunities for them to sell their goods and services to government.
The Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship worked closely with
the Ministry of Government Services, the Small Business Agency of Ontario and
other government ministries to successfully implement the recommendations of
the task force.

    Recent changes include:

     - Providing vendors with plain language information on how to sell to
government. To date, 39 information forums in over 30 communities
across the province have attracted more than 1,600 participants.
     - Ministries are now required to offer debriefing sessions to vendors
who respond to Requests for Proposals or Tenders.
     - Simplifying insurance requirements, where appropriate, to make it
easier for small businesses to participate in becoming a vendor of
record. As a result of the policy changes, most vendors can provide
proof of insurance prior to receiving work and signing a contract
rather than at the initial bidding period.

"We're giving small and medium-sized businesses the tools and resources
they need to successfully compete for government contracts," said Takhar.
"These changes will help small businesses across the province to compete and
grow, leading to greater job creation and investment."
