McGuinty Government Honours Holocaust Survivors

    QUEEN'S PARK, April 25 /CNW/ - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty today
joined the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem in honouring victims of the
Holocaust, paying tribute to survivors and encouraging Ontarians to promote
understanding in their communities.
    "Today, we remember those who survived a dark chapter in human history to
go on to live lives of service, and commitment to family and community," said
Premier McGuinty. "The people we honour today lived through hardships that no
child should have to endure and showed bravery far beyond their years."
    Premier McGuinty joined the Consul General of Israel, Ya'acov Brosh,
Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Mike Colle, Community Safety and
Correctional Services Minister Monte Kwinter and community members for today's
    Yom ha-Shoah was established in 1998 as the provincial Holocaust Memorial
Day to educate Ontarians about the enduring lessons of the Holocaust and to
recognize Holocaust survivors.
    As part of today's ceremony, Premier McGuinty presented scrolls to 10
people who survived the Holocaust, built new lives in Ontario and made
outstanding contributions to their communities and the province.
    "The presence of these survivors is a testament to the strength of the
human spirit in the face of depravity," said Colle. "Each recipient has
triumphed over unimaginable physical and emotional trauma. We are privileged
to be here with them today."
    "Remembering the bravery of the Holocaust survivors and hearing their
stories, gives us the strength and resolve to say that evil has no place in
our society and that we will not stand for it," said Premier McGuinty.
