McGuinty Government Announces Grant To Pickering

    $300,000 Will Help Improve The Quality Of Life

    PICKERING, ON, March 30 /CNW/ - The Ontario Ministry of Tourism is
providing $300,000 to the City of Pickering to improve the quality of life for
residents, announced Minister of Tourism Jim Bradley today.
    "The Ministry of Tourism is pleased to support the City of Pickering,"
said Bradley. "We are assisting community initiatives that will stimulate
economic activity and increase the quality of life of Ontarians."
    The City of Pickering is planning the redevelopment of its waterfront
including a series of public spaces along Lake Ontario, the world's 14th
largest lake.
    "I am pleased the Ontario government recognizes the importance of
supporting communities like Pickering," said Mayor David Ryan. "Pickering is a
vibrant and active community that offers a rich variety of recreational,
leisure and cultural activities for all ages and abilities."
    The vision of the Mayor's Task Force report stated, "The Pickering
Waterfront should create a distinct sense of Place. The sense must be nurtured
by not only our heritage and unique natural setting, but also by what the
waterfront represents to Pickering residents and visitors of all ages and
    "The Ministry of Tourism supports community initiatives because they
promote economic growth, support small business and contribute to building
prosperous communities," said Bradley. "The City of Pickering is a great place
for tourists to visit and enjoy the many recreational activities and
spectacular waterfront scenery."
    Ontario's tourism industry is an important economic sector, contributing
$21 billion to the Ontario economy annually.
