Mattel Issues Safety Alert to Consumers

Company Recalls Some Products With Possible Lead Paint Content

TORONTO, Aug. 1 /CNW/ - Mattel, in cooperation with the United States
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), today announced a voluntary recall
of select Fisher-Price(R) products including various figures and toys
manufactured by a single outside vendor between April 19, 2007 and July 6,
2007, sold alone or as part of sets. Please refer to the product list below
for full details on products that were affected in Canada. Consumers should
stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. (To
access colour photos of the following recalled products, see CPSC's Web site
at www.cpsc.gov).
The named products below may have some paints that could contain excess
levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause
adverse health effects. There have been no incidents reported in either the
United States or Canada.
Individual products and sets were sold at mass merchants and toy stores
across Canada from May through August 2007.
Based on expert opinion, the safety risk is very low, and licking or
touching an affected toy will not cause a problem. That said, if there is
evidence the child has chewed the paint off the toy, it is recommended that
parents speak with their pediatrician.
Consumers should immediately take the product away from children and
contact Fisher-Price to arrange for the return of the product and to receive a
voucher for a replacement toy of the consumer's choice, up to the value of the
returned product. For additional information, contact Fisher-Price at (800)
916-4498 anytime, or visit the firm's Web site at www.service.mattel.com
Mattel is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. While the
contract manufacturer has had a good track record in the past, Mattel regards
the use of lead paint as a serious betrayal of trust and if the company
concludes that safety procedures were knowingly ignored, Mattel will terminate
its relationship.

    Canadian Product List:

It is very important to emphasize that because Mattel is conducting a
thorough review of all products manufactured by vendors in China, there may be
additions made to this list.
