National poll: Breakaways trump power plays and shootouts for Canadian
TORONTO, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - Breakaways, not power plays or shootouts, are
the most exciting moment in a hockey game, according to a new national poll of
hockey fans commissioned by MasterCard Canada as it gets set to celebrate the
new MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence with community residents on
Saturday, Sept. 12.
The poll revealed:
- One-in-four hockey fans (39 per cent) find breakaways the most
exciting moment in a hockey game, followed by power plays (35 per
cent) and shootouts (14 per cent);
- More than half of hockey fans polled (56 per cent) will hang in to
watch regular season and playoff overtime - no matter how late they
will need to stay up - or how tired they will be the next day;
- One in three hockey enthusiasts (37 per cent) rank "Give it 110%" as
their least favourite hockey interview cliché with "Hopefully the
puck starts bouncing our way" a close second (30 per cent);
- When asked which retired player Canadians wish they could see play
today, 50 per cent wanted the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky to return to
the ice, followed by Mario Lemieux (29 per cent), Steve Yzerman (11
per cent) and Mark Messier (10 per cent).
