Marathon Teacher Honoured by Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario

    TORONTO, Aug. 16 /CNW/ - Artie Cooper, a teacher and life-long federation
activist, was honoured by his colleagues on August 15. Cooper was awarded an
Honourary Life Membership in the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) at the federation's Annual Meeting in Toronto.
Honourary Life Memberships, the federation's highest form of recognition,
are given to members who have retired from the education profession and who
have given outstanding service to the federation at the provincial level.
Cooper is retiring this year after a 36-year career as a teacher and
union leader. His entire teaching career has been with the Superior Greenstone
District School Board and the predecessor Lake Superior Board of Education in
Marathon. During that time, he spent 33 years on the local Ontario Public
School Teachers' Federation and ETFO executive, a record of service surpassed
by very few in Ontario.
During his career in the local he served on every negotiating team since
1976 and held every position on the local executive. His peers held him in
such esteem that he held the elected position of local president for 18 years.
"Teachers throughout the province have benefited from Artie's
dedication," ETFO President Emily Noble told the more than 500 guests in
presenting the award to Cooper. "He has worked tirelessly to effect changes in
the lives of members, to strengthen their confidence in their abilities and to
ensure that their choice of a career in the classroom is the best that it can
possibly be.
"ETFO is very proud to present Artie Cooper with an Honourary Life
Membership," said Noble.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents more than
70,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
