    Stock Symbol: MBT

WINNIPEG, May 6 /CNW/ - Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. held its annual
general meeting of shareholders today, where the Board of Directors announced
the election of directors, including one new director, and the retirement of
two directors. In addition, Pierre Blouin, Chief Executive Officer, MTS
Allstream, outlined the company's steady performance, positive growth in
Manitoba, and plans for the future.
"MTS Allstream is well-positioned to weather the current economic
conditions and prosper in the years ahead," said CEO Pierre Blouin. "More
fundamentally, we have a strong balance sheet, a well-diversified business mix
with 70% of our revenues and profitability derived from Manitoba, a clear
track record of innovation and a reputation for superior customer service. We
will not be immune to a weak economy, but consumers and businesses alike will
continue to depend on - and, we believe, invest in - telecom, television,
wireless and Internet services throughout an economic downturn."
Joining the Board of Directors is David G. Leith, who brings with him
more than 20 years of extensive experience in equity, debt, government
finance, and mergers and acquisition gained at CIBC World Markets. Mr. Leith
is a strong addition to the board, and will be joining 10 returning board
members. The returning directors are Pierre Blouin, Jocelyne M. Côté-O'Hara,
N. Ashleigh Everett, The Honourable Gary A. Filmon, Gregory J. Hanson, Kishore
Kapoor, Donald H. Penny, D. Samuel Schellenberg, Carol M. Stephenson, and
Thomas E. Stefanson.
James S.A. MacDonald and Arthur R. Sawchuk both retired from the Board of
Directors at the annual general meeting. Mr. MacDonald and Mr. Sawchuk both
provided tremendous commitment and guidance to the Manitoba Telecom Services
Inc., and the company sincerely thanks them for their efforts.
In addition, Deloitte & Touche LLP was reappointed as the auditors of the
company. Additional information on the business of the meeting is contained in
the company's Management Proxy Circular, which was filed and mailed to
shareholders on April 3, 2009.
