EDMONTON, May 22 /CNW/ - The halls of a certain HR Operations Department
in Edmonton may be a bit empty today. Thirteen co-workers are the lucky
winners of Wednesday's HUGE LOTTO 6/49 Jackpot!
When Patricia Podridske realized that the LOTTO 6/49 Jackpot had climbed
into record territory for the May 20th draw, she sent around an e-mail to her
co-workers, inviting them to join a group to buy some tickets. Twelve of her
co-workers responded, and threw in $2 each. Patricia ran to buy the tickets
from International News in the City Centre Mall at 10 a.m. the day of the
Later that night, Patricia's co-worker Carmina Cruz heard from her very
excited husband and son, that one of her group's tickets - a $5 Quick Pick
ticket with two Selections and one EXTRA 'ENTERED' - had exactly matched all
six of the winning numbers. In fact, that ticket was the only Jackpot winning
ticket sold across Canada, entitling the group to the entire amount! This
began a flurry of telephone calls between the members of the group. The
following morning, Patricia placed a call to Western Canada Lottery
Corporation and started the ball rolling to claim the $49,851,871.00 Jackpot.
"We are in shock!" Patricia exclaimed. "We've been experiencing a whole
range of emotions and really can't quite grasp that this is happening to us!"
The members of the group have all expressed a desire to share their good
fortune with their families. In addition, there are plans to travel the world,
including a honeymoon in Paris for one of the group!
The members of the "lucky thirteen" are: Patricia Podridske, Carol Tripp,
Tanya Bevz, Cheryl Chrapko, Nannet Coulter, Elizabeth Eddington, Irene
Tkaczuk, Lorri Brown, Abbas Mohamed, Carmina Cruz, Sara Gabriel, Everard
Steadman, Emma MacEachern.
This win represents the third-largest Jackpot ever claimed in Canada, and
second-largest claimed with a single winning ticket. The largest jackpot in
Canadian history was also won by a group of Alberta co-workers, in 2005.
