L'Oréal Canada and UNESCO celebrate a decade in their fight against AIDS

MONTREAL, Dec. 1, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Today December 1st, World AIDS Day, L'Oréal Professional Products Division and UNESCO invite you to participate in the 10th anniversary of Hairdressers Against AIDS (HAA): a global advocacy campaign in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The program has reached out to 1.3 million L'Oréal hairdressers in 26 countries, since its creation in South Africa in 2001.

Initially, it was a joint collaboration between L'Oréal Professionnel and UNESCO. Gaining tremendous momentum since then, the program has expanded to include other L'Oréal professional brands such as MATRIX and Redken.

The goal of HAA is to empower hairdressers to use their voice in helping to educate their clients about HIV/AIDS. Aware of the power of the hairdresser's social role, L'Oréal Corporate Foundation and UNESCO combined their forces in 2005 to promote awareness among the global hairdressing community about the prevention of HIV. They initiated a training module that is now part of the hairdressers' curriculum in L'Oréal Professional Products' training centres throughout the world, and most significantly in our Montreal and Toronto Academies.

According to Mikaël Henry, Senior vice-president of the Professional Products Division, "hairdressers are in contact with 95 per cent of the Canadian public, which provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness about HIV-AIDs. Many customers spend one to two hours in the salon per appointment and some develop an intimate bond with their hairdresser. It's natural to talk", he says.

Because 33 million people in the world are living with HIV and because 60% of them are not aware that they are infected, communication becomes a powerful weapon in fighting the propagation of the virus, L'Oréal Professional Products tells hairdressers "Use Your Voice, Use Your Power".
