CAMPBELL RIVER, BC, July 11 /CNW/ - A company listed as 1614136 Ontario
Inc. was convicted of committing an offence, contrary to the Fisheries Act, on
April 8, 2008, in Campbell River Provincial Court, as a result of enforcement
actions undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
In sentencing, the court ruled that between September 16, 2004, and
November 17, 2004, 1614136 Ontario Inc. carried out logging that resulted in
harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat in an unnamed
tributary to the Salmon River near the Village of Sayward on Vancouver Island,
British Columbia.
1614136 Ontario Inc. was fined $2,000 and ordered to pay an additional
$10,000 that will be used to promote the conservation and protection of fish
and fish habitat in and around the Salmon River watershed.
The court also ordered the company to restore the disrupted area by
replanting the disturbed areas along the banks of the unnamed tributary of the
Salmon River with appropriate native species; monitoring the planting success
in the spring of each year following planting, for a three-year period;
replacing dead or dying vegetation each spring; submit a written report each
year summarizing vegetation survival and replacement planting to DFO in
Campbell River; and rehabilitating the channel of the unnamed tributary of the
Salmon River by placing appropriate root wads through a method approved by
DFO acts to end illegal fishing activity. As part of this work, the
Department is asking the general public for information on activities of this
nature or any contravention of the Fisheries Act and Regulations. Anyone with
