Local innovator uncorks wine bottle recycling revolution

MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 14 /CNW/ - MPI Packaging Inc., the first Canadian
manufacturer of revolutionary plastic wine bottles, is pleased to announce
that LCBO store shelves are getting filled with more and more of its bottles.
Compared to traditional glass bottles, MPI's solution is lighter,
unbreakable, and more environmentally friendly - designed with a specialized
technology guaranteed to preserve taste.
French wine maker Boisset Vins & Spiritueux recently debuted its Yellow
Jersey wines at the LCBO in MPI's packaging. And every week over the next six
months or so, several dozen local and international wineries will follow,
selling their products at the LCBO in MPI's bottles.
Manufactured at MPI's main Southern Ontario production facility, the
bottles are the first ever 750 ml PET plastic wine bottles produced in North

Packaging wine has never been greener

"By partnering with the LCBO and wine makers across the globe, we are
leading the way when it comes to environmentally-friendly packaging for wine,"
said Ron O'Brien, President, MPI Packaging Inc.
Marked with the "1-PETE" plastic recycling code, the wine bottles use
90 per cent less packaging than regular glass bottles, which means less fuel
is used during transportation thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Part of the blue box program across Canada, MPI's wine bottles are
100 per cent recyclable. They are made of PET plastic, the most recycled
packaging material in North America compared to glass, metal or other
The plastic bottles can be recycled in many products; more plastic
bottles, polar fleece jackets, auto upholstery, and frozen food trays etc.
Just think, a total of about 14 of the 750ml bottles is enough plastic needed
to create a polyester t-shirt.
Manufacturers are increasingly converting to PET as it's the most
flexible and recycled plastic in the world. Last year, the global market for
PET packaging was over $20 billion US. Demand for PET plastic is growing
faster than any other type, with current requirements outstripping supply.

    Revolutionary technology

For years now, spirits have been bottled in plastic, but just recently it
became technologically possible to do the same with wine. By incorporating a
special material called MonOxbar(TM) into PET plastic bottles, the wine's
flavour and colour is protected from oxidation. Not intended to be cellared,
wine in plastic bottles has a shelf life of slightly more than one year. This
doesn't pose a problem, according to the LCBO, since 90 per cent of wine is
consumed 24 hours after being purchased.
"We are the only Canadian supplier licensed to provide this patented
technology. For about a year and a half now, we've had the pleasure of working
with Philadelphia-based Constar International in a combined effort to
introduce this innovation into Canada," said Ron O'Brien, President, MPI
Packaging Inc.

    Ground-breaking design

Because they're made of plastic, MPI's bottles have endless design
possibilities compared to traditional glass bottles, metal containers or tetra
pack containers. Not only can the plastic bottles be manufactured into unique
shapes, they can also have embossed designs embedded within the plastic
itself, giving manufacturers the opportunity to distinguish their brand beyond
the usual constraints of just a paper label.
Weighing 90 per cent less than glass bottles, the plastic bottles have a
screw cap that easily opens and closes.
MPI's innovation and growth potential attracted leading venture partner,
VenGrowth Private Equity Partners Inc. ("VenGrowth") when the company was
seeking expansion capital.
"After a few years of working with MPI, we continue to be very impressed
by the company's strong commitment to provide inventive customized solutions
for a growing clientele, " said Graham McBride, Managing General Partner,
