Loblaw Companies Ltd. and President's Choice(R) Children's Charity Hit Milestone Mark

In 2006 $600,000 in grants awarded in the Atlantic region, making the
lives of physically or developmentally challenged children and their
    families a little easier

    DARTMOUTH, NS, March 6 /CNW/ - President's Choice(R) Children's Charity
(PCCC) and Loblaw Companies Ltd. start 2007 off having reached the $600,000
mark in granting direct financial assistance to children with developmental or
physical disabilities and their families living in the Atlantic region. This
milestone brings the charity's overall grant level to more than $21 million
since its inception and the number of families reached to more than 4,200
across Canada, making PCCC one of the largest corporate charities in the
    "This is a significant milestone for President's Choice(R) Children's
Charity," says Galen G. Weston, Executive Chairman of Loblaw Companies Ltd.
and Chairman of PCCC. "We want our stores to be actively engaged in every
community in which we are located, and we are committed to continuing this
PCCC is a national charity which differs from other corporate charities
in that grants are awarded directly to local families rather than the funding
being dispersed through third-party charities or groups. Loblaw Companies Ltd.
fully covers the costs of administration and operations for PCCC, ensuring
that 100 per cent of every dollar donated is awarded in the province in which
it is donated. In 2006 PCCC granted more than $6.2 million to 765 families
across Canada
"Loblaw Companies' stores across all banners make grants to families
directly," says Peggy Hornell, Director, Fundraising and Administration, PCCC.
"In the Atlantic, this means that a record number of store employees involved
themselves in the lives of local families and, we hope, inspired their own
lives and the communities in which they work."

Making a difference one child at a time
The goal of PCCC is to remove obstacles that make everyday life extremely
difficult for children with disabilities and their families. By providing
direct financial assistance in the form of mobility equipment, environmental
modifications and more, the charity is able to supply much needed resources
and help provide a renewed sense of independence, dignity and freedom for
children with special needs.
An unsolicited email communication forwarded to PCCC by a store manager
in the Atlantic region in December 2006 speaks to the impact participating in
the grant process made on him when delivering grant news to a family. The
family was requesting funds for a wheelchair accessible van:

"I telephoned a family in our region to give them the great news that
PCCC was able to assist them in buying a wheelchair accessible van for
their child. The total joy and relief in the mother's voice brought a
lump to my throat. The feeling of pride and joy continued when the store
employees welcomed the family to a cheque presentation at the store."

Raising funds for PCCC takes place across all Loblaw Companies Ltd.
banners and stores, both through local community initiatives such as car
washes, BBQs and in-store coin boxes to national fundraising initiatives
including the sale of The President's Choice(R) Decadent Cookie during
promotional periods and the Jaden Bear sold during the festive season.
Nationally, in 2006, Loblaw Companies Ltd. employees directly contributed
$1.9 million with the company matching this with an additional $1 million
