L'International des Feux Loto-Québec presented by TELUS Awards Jupiters - Gold to the United States, Silver to Australia, and Bronze to China

MONTREAL, Aug. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - They filled the skies and our ears with
Rock Loves on July 30: Pyrotechnico leaves L'International des Feux
Loto-Québec presented by TELUS with the gold jupiter. The Australian firm of
Howard & Sons wins the silver, while China's Sunny International takes the
The award ceremony took place on Wednesday at La Ronde, just before the
noncompetitive closing pyrotechnics display on the theme of "sans tambour, ni
trompette" (without fanfare) put on by Panzera.
Based on general opinion, the 2008 competition was of very high caliber.
Indeed, many of the shows could have deserved one of these precious trophies
in what has often been referred to as the Olympics in the pyrotechnical world.

Gold Jupiter Goes to the United States

Fans of rock and fireworks were served up a feast when these two
explosive forms of expression joined forces in an extravagant pyromusical rock
opera. The United States opted for a totally overwhelming display requiring
six additional structures built on the launch ramps, including three 10-m-high
towers. The show, entitled Rock Loves was built around five themes often
closely associated with this type of musical and this particular production
was no exception. Pyrotecnico's life has been like a roller coaster especially
as July 4 rolls around each year, since the firm organizes 600 to
700 fireworks shows for Independence Day celebrations in the United States.
The firm's "normal" business, however, did not prevent the designers of Rock
Loves from investing nine months of work into this original show, according to
Ralph Piacquadio and Rocco Vitale. Vitale, who heads up Pyrotechnico with his
brother, has fireworks in his blood: four generations have preceded him in the
business since his great-great-grandfather founded the firm in 1889. He would
be very proud, indeed, of his descendent!

    Silver Jupiter Goes to Australia

On July 19, Lac des Dauphins was lit up in a way rarely seen over the
last quarter century that the competition has been held in Montréal with the
performance of Australia's Howard & Sons. The firm came to town with no less
than 30 pontoons to deploy what they call "close proximity pyrotechnics."
Their show, entitled Evolution, used light and sound to showcase well-known
pieces of music that have "evolved" through new covers, arrangement, remixes,
and rerecording. Howard & Sons ran just about every kind of music-classical,
electronic, pop, and rock-through their huge mixer. A worldwide pyrotechnical
leader, Howard & Sons remains a family business, as is often the case in this
field. Since 1922, the company has been headed by four generations of the
Howard family. In other words, three generations have produced "pyrotechnical"
offspring. And the tradition is continuing: the fifth generation is already
under way!

    Bronze Jupiter Goes to China

In an effort to win the hearts of Montréalers, Sunny International
offered To Life and Love on August 2, a pyromusical transposition of a Chinese
legend that, in many ways, resembles the tale of Romeo and Juliet. The story
of Ying Tai-a young woman who, although promised to another, falls in love
with Shan Bo-was presented in five acts accompanied by 13 pieces of music. The
tale comes to a tragic end as the two lovers die and are transformed into
butterflies who fly away. The music serving as a sound support for the
fireworks was both varied and rich in emotion. The works included Mozart,
Vivaldi, traditional Chinese melodies, and even certain strains from Harry
Potter. Narration in French was also provided. "If, one day, you had to go
away, my destiny would suddenly change completely," is a translation of a
representative excerpt of the accompanying text.

Summary of the 2008 Edition: Setting Sights on the 25th Anniversary!

In addition to the outstanding caliber of the participants, it should be
remembered that the 2008 edition of L'international des Feux Loto-Québec
presented by TELUS ushered in a wave of newness, in particular, new
grandstand, new VIP balconies, the new Jardins des Etoiles nightclub, a new
set of assessment criteria, and five "new" firms in their freshman appearances
in the competition. This year, personalities from Québec's world of art were
closely associated with the International. Moreover, the New York Times stated
the competition was world-class. Referring to Montréal as "a city known for
its festivals," the Times stated that the shows of L'International des Feux
Loto-Québec presented by TELUS were exclamation marks punctuating Saturday and
Wednesday nights. Coverage by the Times also drew the attention of American
and English-Canadian networks. On to next year, when L'International will
celebrate its 25th anniversary with true brilliance!
