Life After Death: Chernobyl 25 Years Later

TORONTO, April 29 /CNW/ - As the world watches another nuclear disaster unfold, Bezpala Brown Gallery (BBG) presents an opportunity to explore a disaster's aftermath - creeping decay contrasted with regeneration and transformation.

Imagine being forced to flee your home. You take what you can. You leave behind what you cannot. You don't return. From what you have left, scavengers feast and flee. Buildings are ravaged. Then there is isolation. The people are gone; vacant structures remain. The isolation becomes a sanctuary for wildlife to proliferate; for vegetation to infest. A new order surfaces.

Mathew Merrett and Olena Sullivan present "Volatile Particles: 25 Years after Chernobyl", a photographic journey through Chernobyl's exclusion zone. Volatile particles refer to the contaminants that were released into the air from the Chernobyl reactor meltdown, half of these landing outside the immediate area and affecting regions as far as the United Kingdom. These particles are the genesis of a new era, one which we are still exploring the effects of. Or, perhaps the volatile particles are the humans who set the stage for this disaster.

It is the artistry of the photography and the superimposing of the day-to-day images of pre-disaster life on current day images that succeed in distinguishing this work from others who have explored the exclusion zone. What was lost and what is now runs before our eyes as shown here in Sullivan's "Ghosts in the Zone".  What may be is left to our imaginations.

This Exhibition is part of the CONTACT Photography 2011 Festival running now through May 31 at BBG. A reception open to the public will be held on May 14th from 5 to 8 pm.
