Alberta Man's Winning Ticket Purchased in Outlook, Saskatchewan
WINNIPEG, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Don Grimard may very well be the youngest
retiree in his hometown. At just 21, the Lethbridge resident's life changed in
a big way when he discovered he'd won $17,292,550 on the August 5th LOTTO 6/49
At the time, Don was working in the oilfields near Outlook, Saskatchewan.
When the LOTTO 6/49 Jackpot reached an estimated $34 Million, he made sure he
had a chance to win, purchasing six $5 Quick Pick tickets - each with two
Selections and one EXTRA "ENTERED" - from D & E Convenience Store in Outlook.
The day after the draw, Don learned from a co-worker that there had been
a Jackpot winner in Saskatchewan. "He said someone in Saskatchewan shared it
with a ticket bought in Quebec," he remembered. "I hadn't checked my tickets
yet, so we went to the store, and I started scanning them on the Ticket
Checker. When I got to this ticket - I think it was the fifth one - I had to
keep scanning it to make sure everything was right!" And Don's eyes weren't
deceiving him - he really had just become $17 Million richer!
"I ran out of the store and started jumping up and down in the parking
lot," he remembered. "I was hollering and screaming! I went back to work," he
laughed, "but I was only able to work for a half day - it felt like a dream!"
Anxious to start this new chapter of his life on the right foot, Don took
a few weeks before claiming his prize to seek financial advice. "It's
important to me to make sure I have things in place so I will never have to
worry about finances again," he said. He also added, with a grin, "I've also
been doing a lot of golfing over the last few weeks, and figuring out fun ways
to tell family and friends that I won."
In addition to making sure his financial future is secure, the happy new
Millionaire said he plans to use his winnings to help his family and do some
traveling. Although he plans to continue to live in Alberta for the time
being, "Outlook is definitely my favourite town in Saskatchewan," he laughed.
Don's $17,292,550 windfall also makes a mark on the lottery history books
in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Not only is it the largest prize ever
claimed by one player in Alberta, but it's also the largest lottery prize ever
won on a ticket purchased in Saskatchewan, just edging out a $17 Million SUPER
7 prize won by a Moose Jaw resident in March of this year.
