Leading health reporter wins journalism award

Public Policy Forum announces recipient of Hyman Solomon

OTTAWA, Jan. 21 /CNW/ - André Picard was named today as this year's recipient of the Public Policy Forum's annual Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism.

The Hyman Solomon Award is presented annually to a journalist whose work provides insights into the policy-making process in Canada, and explains to Canadians how changes in public policy affect their individual well-being and collective economic progress.

"André Picard's research and writing have considerably broadened our understanding of the dimensions and impact of health policy," said Public Policy Forum president David Mitchell. "His journalism is helping to lead Canadians and their governments towards much needed health care innovation."

Picard is the public health reporter at The Globe and Mail, where he has been a staff writer since 1987. He is also the author of three books and has received much acclaim for his writing and for his dedication to improving healthcare. In 2010, he was awarded a National Newspaper Award as Canada's top newspaper columnist.

The award will be presented at the 24th Annual Testimonial Dinner in Toronto on April 28th.  This year's Dinner will be co-Chaired by New Brunswick Premier the Hon. David Alward, and GE Canada's President and CEO Elyse Allan.  The previously announced Testimonial Award honourees for 2010 are Bill Davis, Gordon Nixon, Monique Leroux and Jim Stanford.
