LCBO encourages safe travel and responsible gatherings this summer

TORONTO, May 14 /CNW/ - As Ontario warms up and barbecue, pool and patio
season begins, LCBO encourages everyone to plan ahead and make safe choices
about alcohol.
"There are lots of ways you can enjoy your get-togethers that will help
avoid possible alcohol-related problems when planning your summer gatherings
at home or at the cottage," says LCBO President and CEO Bob Peter. "For
example, avoid alcohol until the day's fun activities are over - especially if
they include boating or driving."
LCBO offers responsible hosting tips, as well as ways to help prevent
drinking and driving and get the keys from someone who is impaired, and a
selection of delicious non-alcoholic mocktail recipes at
LCBO also offers tips for parents of teens to make sure prom night is a
night to remember - for all the right reasons. LCBO staff continue to do their
part to help prevent underage drinking as well. Last year, LCBO retail staff
challenged over 2.4 million people and refused service to over 170,000, an
increase of almost 28 per cent, for reasons of age, intoxication or because
they were suspected of buying for a minor or someone who was intoxicated.
On May 1, 2009, Ontario introduced new sanctions to help prevent drinking
and driving and increase road and waterway safety. Drivers who register a
blood alcohol concentration from 0.05 to 0.08 (known as the warn range) will
lose their driver's licence at roadside or on the water for three, seven or 30
days. LCBO is helping the Ministry of Transportation communicate the new
sanctions by displaying posters and making brochures available in LCBO stores
this summer.
For more information on preventing impaired driving, visit the Ministry
of Transportation's website at Please remember that
the consequences for impaired boating are the same as for impaired driving in
Don't forget to bring a reusable bag when you shop at LCBO and please
take your empty beverage alcohol containers (large and small glass bottles,
PET plastic, Tetra Paks, bag-in-box and cans) to The Beer Store for a full
deposit refund.
