Launch of the entry period for the 11th edition of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec - Merrill Lynch Economic and Financial Journalism Award

    MONTREAL, Oct. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - It is with great pride that the Caisse
de depôt et placement du Québec, Merrill Lynch and the Association des
économistes québécois (ASDEQ) announce the launch today of the 20072008
edition of the Caisse de depôt et placement du Québec - Merrill Lynch Economic
and Financial Journalism Award. This year, the 11th edition of the competition
will once again celebrate the important contribution made by journalists in
this sector to the Quebec economic scene.
    This prestigious competition is open to all journalists working in Quebec
in either of the two official languages in print, audiovisual or electronic
media. To qualify, entrants must submit, before November 16, 2007, a quality
story on an economic and financial theme that was published or aired between
September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007. In order to represent as many different
journalistic styles as possible, awards will be given in three categories:
Long Feature Story, Short Feature Story and Column, Analysis, Commentary,
Editorial. The competition rules, description of the categories and entry
procedure are available from ASDEQ or by visiting:
    "Since the inception of the Award in 1997, ASDEQ has been delighted with
the excitement generated by this competition among journalists in the economic
and financial field, as well as by the importance and credibility the Award
has attained. This is also reflected in the growing number of highquality
entries submitted each year and by the excellence of the winners," notes André
Downs, principal project director of the Policy Research Initiative (PRI),
attached to the Department of Human Resources and Social Development Canada
(HRDC), and president of ASDEQ for 20072008.
    As well as underlining the brilliant work being done by Quebec
journalists in the economic sector, the Caisse de depôt et placement du Québec
- Merrill Lynch Economic and Financial Journalism Award aims to highlight
their contribution in raising public awareness of this subject. According to
Guy Savard, Chairman of the Board, Merrill Lynch Canada and principal
architect of the Award, "In an era of globalization, we can see that each new
economic issue has repercussions within Quebec. Considering the complexity of
today's issues, the role of the journalist in disseminating balanced and
accessible information becomes vital, hence the importance of recognizing
their work with this Award."
    HenriPaul Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Caisse de
depôt et placement du Québec adds "Through our association with ASDEQ and this
Award, the Caisse aims to encourage the development and dissemination of
economic and financial knowledge in Quebec, as well as underlining the
excellent work of journalists who cover this subject. Given the consistent
quality of the entries, the Caisse has been proud to be associated over the
past four years with the most important economic journalism award in Quebec."
    Last year, the principal prize of $10,000 went to Jacques Benoît of La
Presse for his excellent series of short feature stories entitled " La SAQ
gonfle ses prix", " Les prix des vins européens baisseront denviron 8 %" and "
Autre faux pas de la SAQ ". Astrid Morchoine of Les Affaires received an award
of $5,000 for her dossier "International spécial Chine" while the third prize
of $2,500 went to Michel Labrecque for his feature story "LEtat providence
réinventé : quel avenir pour la socialdémocratie " broadcast by RadioCanada.

    The prizes and jury members

    This year, awards of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 will be given to winners
in the following categories: Long Feature Story, Short Feature Story and
Column, Analysis, Commentary, Editorial. The jury also reserves the right to
recognize the contribution of a journalist to the advancement of economic and
financial information with a Career Achievement Award, if appropriate.
    The jury for this 11th edition is composed of Charles A. Carrier, General
Manager of ASDEQ; Claude Masson, economist and former professor of economics
at Université Laval; Pierre Bergeron, host of the program FrancOpinion and
former manager of Le Droit; Claude Beauchamp, journalist and former host of
the program Capital Action (RDI); and Thierry Watine, professor at the
Department of Information and Communications of Université Laval.
