Launch of the 13th Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau - SOLIDARITY. COURAGE. HOPE - A 600 km bike tour in support of children with cancer

MONTREAL, July 7 /CNW Telbec/ - This morning at 7 am at the Centre de
cancérologie Charles-Bruneau of the CHU Sainte-Justine 25 cyclists will embark
on the 600 km trek to raise funds for children suffering from cancer in order
to give them the best chance of recovery. From July 7 to 10, the 13th edition
of the Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau will traverse the cities of Drummondville,
Sherbrooke, and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu before finishing in Montreal.
Under the theme Solidarity, Courage, Hope, 25 businessmen and women will
be pushing the pedals in support of the daily struggle waged by children with
cancer. They thereby hope to top the $500,000 raised last year thanks to their
involvement and the generosity of the public.
For Pierre Bruneau, spokesperson of the Fondation Centre de cancérologie
Charles-Bruneau, this year's theme sends a strong, encouraging message:
"Solidarity with all those involved, in particular with the business community
that works together for this cause. Their participation is invigorating.
Courage, as in the courage shown by the sick children who inspire us so much.
Hope, as in hope for recovery and the hope for the advancement of research
generated with the raised money."
As in former editions, each cyclist is paired with a child suffering from
cancer and carries its photo on his or her heart throughout the trek. That
heart-to-heart pairing is a source of motivation for the cyclists as well as
for the children with cancer.
The spokesperson of the Tour 2008, Delson Laferrière, 16 years of age and
himself in remission of a cancer, is glad to be cycling among the main bunch
of riders at the start of the tour. "It's a great pleasure for me to be
involved in the Tour CIBC Charles Bruneau and to cycle the 600 km. It's a way
of thanking all those who have helped and encouraged me. But it's also a way
to give courage and hope to Shawn, who is 12 years old and who also suffers
from cancer. I'm very proud to be his supporter for the Tour. My experience
has taught me to never throw in the towel. There is always hope. Hope in
research and hope to recover."
CIBC, the main sponsor of the Tour, is proud to be actively involved
again this year. "I wish to congratulate the businesses who participate in and
contribute to the Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau. The solidarity and participation
of the business people is a key factor in the advancement of research and in
giving hope to the children and their families" said Sylvain Vinet, Senior
Vice-President, Retail Distribution, Eastern Canada, CIBC.

    The 2008 Tour

The Tour CIBC Charles-Bruneau 2008 allows the community to share stories
of courage and to thereby raise awareness for the importance of investing in
children's cancer research. In addition to the cyclists who will ride the
entire trek of 600 km, twenty additional cyclists, "les ambassadeurs," will
join the main bunch in covering the distance between St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and
Montreal (Hôtel de ville) on the last day. In the presence of the Mayor of
Montreal, the total amount raised will then be announced.
In addition to donations from the businesses participating in the Tour,
the public can also show its solidarity with the children suffering from
cancer by making a donation online at or
by calling 1-877-256-0404.
The public is also invited to cheer on the cyclists at designated
stations of the route (see appendix).
