Launch of Centraide Campaign 2007 - 10,000 people hit the street - The general public is invited to march on October 1st

    MONTREAL, Sept. 30 /CNW Telbec/ - A celebration of solidarity is on our
community's agenda for Monday, October 1. The general public is invited to
kick the month off by participating in the 16th annual March of
1,000 Umbrellas, which will mark the official launch of Centraide Campaign
    Rain or shine, over 10,000 people will hold up their umbrellas to
symbolize the assistance offered to those who suffer from poverty and
exclusion. They will march side by side with showbiz, arts and sports
personalities, business leaders, company employees, volunteers, and
representatives of community-based agencies, the public sector, the trade
unions and the media, in order to give a rousing kickoff to this important
fundraising campaign.
    We will begin assembling at 11:30 a.m. on McGill College Avenue, at the
corner of Ste. Catherine Street. The march will start at 12:00 noon and
proceed east along St. Catherine Street to Complexe Desjardins, where the
co-chairs of Centraide Campaign 2007 - Norman M. Steinberg, Co-Chair of Ogilvy
Renault LLP, and Thierry Vandal, President and CEO of Hydro-Québec - will
announce the campaign's financial goal.

    Centraide of Greater Montreal is an independent organization managed by a
board of directors which is representative of the community. It serves the
Island of Montreal, Laval, and communities on the South Shore. Centraide
supports 360 community-based agencies and projects that offer help and comfort
to more than half a million people in need, while providing lasting solutions
to social problems such as poverty, hunger, school dropout, homelessness,
psychological distress and exclusion. It relies on a network of over 73,000
volunteers, 22,000 of whom work on its campaign.
