TORONTO, May 5 /CNW/ - Elementary public school teachers, members of the
Lakehead, Simcoe County, and Thames Valley elementary teacher Locals of the
Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO), ratified new collective
agreements yesterday evening.
"Last night's votes mean there are new four-year collective agreements in
place for the 5,400 elementary public school teachers teaching in Lakehead,
Simcoe County, and Thames Valley public elementary schools. Bargaining was
challenging in all of these areas, but both sides were able to reach a deal in
each board," said ETFO President David Clegg.
"These are all important settlements. Every ratification is an
endorsement of our campaign to improve working conditions for elementary
public school teachers. Each contract ratified tonight also means there will
be improved learning conditions for students along with peace and stability
for the local community," Clegg said.
The Lakehead Teacher Local represents 380 elementary teachers, the Simcoe
County Teacher Local represents 2,000 elementary teachers, and the Thames
Valley Teacher Local represents 3,000 elementary teachers.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
