TORONTO, March 20 /CNW/ - KPMG LLP today provided an update on the
progress of the 2007 Barley Plebiscite in its role as vote administrator.
The deadline for declarations and ballots to be returned to KPMG passed
on March 13, 2007. KPMG is now performing procedures to verify the eligibility
of submitted declarations and awaiting the final delivery of completed voter
packages through the mail system.
Counting of the ballots will commence on March 24, 2007. KPMG has
arranged for senior municipal elections officials from the provinces of
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to act as scrutineers during the count.
The scrutineers will be on hand to provide objective and independent
monitoring of the counting of the ballots and the tabulation of results.
KPMG will submit a report of the results of the plebiscite to the federal
government upon completion of the tabulation. Results will be available on the
internet at www.2007barleyvote.ca subsequent to the federal government's
public release of the plebiscite results.
The declarations and ballots will remain in KPMG's custody and will be
destroyed by KPMG subsequent to the public release of the plebiscite results
by the federal government. One of the scrutineers involved in the counting of
the ballots will be on hand to observe the destruction of these materials.
