Knopf Canada to publish new book by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, author of Infidel

"Our two worlds co-exist in the same city streets..."
    Ayaan Hirsi Ali

TORONTO, Feb. 25 /CNW/ - Knopf Canada announced today the acquisition of
a new book by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, whose bestselling memoir, INFIDEL, translated
into 33 languages, was a much loved, major bestseller in Canada, and was
published to international acclaim.
Somali-born Ayaan Hirsi Ali, formerly a member of the Dutch Parliament,
has campaigned actively for over a decade for the urgent need to reform Islam
from within, prompting threats from extremists. Sixteen years ago, she fled an
arranged marriage, and in 2001 she left the Muslim faith. She has been an
active contributor to the debates on Islam ever since, whether as a member of
the Dutch Parliament or as a scholar in the US. In November, 2004, the Dutch
filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who had worked with Hirsi Ali on her film,
"Submission," was assassinated in the streets of Amsterdam. Ayaan Hirsi Ali
continues to struggle to reconcile the complex contradictions of her two
worlds-and ours.
Louise Dennys, Executive Publisher of The Knopf Random Canada Publishing
Group, who acquired the Canadian rights at auction from Susanna Lea of Susanna
Lea Associates, says: "The new book, as yet untitled, will be a blend of
personal narrative and reportage, weaving together Ayaan Hirsi Ali's ongoing
story, including her reconciliation with her father who disowned her,
addressing the situation of girls and women in the world today, and speaking
openly about her own efforts to reconcile Islamic and Western values. She
explores why Muslim women agree to submit to a world ruled by men, and Islam's
obsession with virginity, excision, and the honor code, as well as her own
relationship with sex and "dishonor". She addresses the criticism leveled at
her by some Muslim women, and the support she is given by others. She reveals
what "freedom" means with constant security protection; and the challenges
that came with learning how to handle a life where she herself (rather than a
man) had to make her own decisions. She analyses what it is to be culturally a
Muslim but philosophically an atheist, and those moments of doubt and
loneliness when the echoes of religion are still soothing. Honest, gripping,
very moving, and controversial, Ayaan Hirsi Ali's new book will be a clarion
call for humanity that we're incredibly proud to be publishing."
Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been listed in TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential
People, a Glamour Hero of the Year, was the subject of a report on CBS "60
Minutes", and has appeared on major media with Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert,
and Avi Lewis. She is currently employed by AEI in Washington, D.C., and
lectures around the world.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali's new book is scheduled to be published in Spring 2010.
