Kawartha Pine Ridge Teacher Elected To The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario Executive

TORONTO, Aug. 15 /CNW/ - Deb St. Amant, a teacher with the Kawartha Pine
Ridge District School Board, was elected to the Executive of the Elementary
Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) at the federation's annual meeting in
Toronto today.
St. Amant, who brings the perspective of an Aboriginal French as a Second
Language teacher to the Executive table, told the more than 500 meeting
delegates that strong voices are needed on the ETFO executive. "All voices
must be heard, felt, and respected," she said. "I am committed to equity and
social justice, as demonstrated by my work with the Canadian Labour Congress,
the Canadian Teachers' Federation, L'Association Canadienne-Francaise de
l'Ontario (ACFO), and within ETFO as member and chair of the Aboriginal
Education Committee.
"We must continue to build on what ETFO has done and use our solidarity
to improve the quality of our lives, salaries, benefits, preparation time,
leaves, and work-life balance. Having seen how it has directly affected my
life over 24 years of teaching, I am committed to maintaining strong
collective bargaining as the priority of the federation," she said.
St. Amant began her teaching career in 1982 and has taught as a Core
French teacher and an Extended French teacher. She has been involved in the
federation on both the local and provincial levels, serving as Chairperson of
the Kawartha Pine Ridge Equity Committee, and member and chairperson of ETFO's
Aboriginal Education Standing Committee.
She is active in her community, coaching soccer teams and serving on the
board of directors of ACFO.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents more than
70,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
