Journalism scholarships awarded by the National Press Club of Canada

    OTTAWA, June 9 /CNW Telbec/ - Three Canadian journalism students were
awarded a total of $18,000 in funding from the first-ever scholarships from
the National Press Club of Canada (NPC).
    The winners were selected through a national competition that was open to
journalism students attending Canadian colleges and universities. In order to
continue receiving the scholarship funds, the recipients must maintain good
academic standing and be enrolled full-time in a recognized journalism program
in Canada.
    The winners of this year's scholarships were announced tonight at the
NPC's annual Spirit of Canada Gala in Ottawa.
    The recipient of the Spencer Moore Scholarship, valued at $3,000 per year
for three years, is Jessie Worobey, a first-year journalism student at
Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario.
    Gregory Sawisky, a third-year student in the Bachelor of Journalism
program at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, was
awarded the Barbara Frum Scholarship valued at $2,000 per year for up to three
    Bethany Horne, a second-year student in the Bachelor of Journalism
program at the University of King's College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was
awarded the National Press Club of Canada Foundation Scholarship of $1,000 per
year for up to three years.
    "With these scholarships, the NPC is taking its place as an important
stakeholder in Canadian journalism and public affairs," said NPC president
Gord McIntosh. "We will be doing more to promote first-rate journalism."
