"There are no sad songs, only poorly written ones." - Jon Brooks

TORONTO, March 29 /CNW/ - Jon Brooks will release his new CD "Ours and
the Shepherds" - a collection of Canadian war stories - on Thursday May 3rd at
Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. West. There will be an opening set performed by
Greg Quill at 8:30pm. Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door. Dinner

Jon Brooks is part unrepentant idealist, part fallen mystic, part secular
preacher. He is a troubadour wholly devoted to "the song as a necessary means
to greater social justice." His inspiration is taken from those on the outside
of the circle of approval. Brooks maintains, "only a stranger will save this
Thus far, Brooks' characters living 'on the outside of the circle of
approval' have included the homeless, the broken-spirited, the lonely, the
agnostic, the honest, the guilty, the "sad smiled", the single moms, the
underemployed, the C+ married, the orphaned, the estranged, the widowed - in
Brooks' words, "I'm only interested in characters I love and who have suffered
in this spiritually homeless age."
On 'Ours And The Shepherds', Brooks turns his "cruel eye" toward the
soldier - particularly, the scarred soul veteran. Songs on "Ours And The
Shepherds" represent the ambitious exploration of a wide range of locations,
characters and stories, thematically connected by Canadian war experience from
WWI, WWII, Korea, Bosnia, Rwanda, through to current missions in Afganistan.
The songs are mainly narratives written with vicious detail, provocative
social commentary, and vivid lyrics clean of cliché and impossible to ignore.
Brooks' 2005 release, 'No Mean City,' is a 13-song/novel set amid the
homelessness of Toronto streets and is aimed without caution at what Brooks
considers "our contemporary moral fatigue and lack of inner life." His new CD,
'Ours And The Shepherds', is a collection of songs examining Canada's war
experience, to be released on May 3rd at Hugh's Room.
