Join the Sears Great Canadian Chill in Ottawa and Help Stop Kids Cancer Cold

January 1, 2012

OTTAWA, Nov. 16, 2011 /CNW/ - This New Year's Day take the plunge for kids living with cancer. On Sunday, January 1, 2012, Sears invites you to participate and join fellow Canadians in the Sears Great Canadian Chill, a polar bear dip established by Sears as an annual Holiday tradition that sees Canadians brave icy waters while raising money for an important cause. Proceeds from The Chill will support pediatric oncology initiatives at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

"The Sears Great Canadian Chill is one of the many ways Sears supports children and families in the communities where we do business," said Calvin McDonald, President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc. "New Years Day is typically a quiet day and participating in the Sears Great Canadian Chill is a great way to bring families together for a day of fun while helping other families who are in the fight of their life."

Chillers will rush into the cold waters of the Ottawa River at Britannia Beach donning bathing suits or zany costumes. The family event will invite supporters and friends to join in for a day of fun, friendship and fundraising. Participants and spectators will be hosted under heated tents while they enjoy entertainment, prizes for top fundraising and the highly anticipated costume contest.

The Sears Great Canadian Chill will raise funds for the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation. Half of the donations made by the Foundation will benefit pediatric oncology programs at CHEO. The remainder will benefit national pediatric oncology research initiatives, such as The Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship.

In support of kids cancer, Sears has been title sponsor of events that have raised over $4.3 million for the cause since 2008. In 2010, the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation made a multi-year, $5 million commitment to SickKids, which sees 25% of all new cases of pediatric cancer in Canada and 60% of all cases in Ontario. Half of this was directed towards the completion of a state-of-the-art cancer clinic and half is in support of The Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship.

"Sears commitment to the health of our children and youth is inspiring", said Fred Bartlett, CHEO Foundation President and CEO. "When a company continues to think outside of the box and create unique events like the Sears Great Canadian Chill to help our hospital, you know their commitment is heartfelt.  On behalf of all the families who rely on CHEO, we thank everyone at Sears for their amazing support."
