QUEEN'S PARK, Aug. 8 /CNW/ - Progressive Conservative Party Leader John
Tory today issued the following statement, shortly before attending the
funeral for York Region Police Const. Rob Plunkett.
"Today we honour the life, the family and community service of a
dedicated police officer who heroically put his life at risk every day in
order to do his job.
"When we lose a police officer in the line of duty, it's like losing a
member of our extended family. Const. Rob Plunkett was working to protect us,
to serve us and to keep our streets safe. He died doing all of those things.
Like so many others we have seen, it was a senseless, tragic act which defies
"I want to once again express my condolences to Const. Plunkett's family
and friends. I am attending the funeral today to join others in remembering
Const. Plunkett and thanking him and his family for his 22 years of service
and commitment to protecting our communities, and his volunteer work
supporting the Special Olympics. The outpouring of emotion and support we've
seen since last week and the huge crowds expected today are only the beginning
of a fitting tribute for Const. Plunkett. The best tribute would be if we
ensure we never forget his service and his commitment to his community and
this province, and continue to be mindful of the same service being rendered
by many others each and every day."
