John Tory on private school scheme: "I will not be backing off"

    TORONTO, Sept. 30 /CNW/ - Despite saying three days ago "I will not be
backing off" (St. Catharines Standard, September 27, 2007), CFTO News reported
tonight that John Tory is preparing to back away from sending tax dollars for
private religious schools.

    "Despite Tory's defense of the policy CTV News has learned that he may be
    prepared to temporarily back away from the controversial funding issue.
    Sources tell CTV News that Tory is talking to his caucus about a plan to
    restart his campaign, the idea is to soften the bitter taste of the faith
    based school funding issue, options include deferring the plan for a year
    or sending it to a commission or even public hearings. An official in the
    John Tory camp denied any knowledge of our information but sources tell
    us the back away strategy may be the only option if Tory has any hope at
    defeating the McGuinty Liberals."

    Here's what John Tory told the Toronto Star on September 18, 2007:
    "When you do something on principle that you really believe is the right
    thing to do... you don't back away. You never go wrong doing the right
