Iraq/Spain: Award for AP photographer held by US Army for two years

    MONTREAL, June 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Iraqi photographer Bilal Hussein was on
22 May awarded the 2008 journalism prize by Spain's Miguel Gil Moreno
Foundation and publisher Random House Mondadori. Hussein, who was working for
US news agency Associated Press, was arrested in April 2006 and held without
trial by the US Army for two years on suspicion of collaborating with Iraqi
insurgents. The foundation, created in memory of Spanish journalist Miguel Gil
Moreno, killed in an ambush in Sierra Leone in 2000, promotes training and
safety for freelance journalists and has since 2002 awarded an annual prize to
a journalist working in countries in crisis.
