More than 250 million IP-X UHF RFID Chips delivered
BURLINGTON, ON, Jan. 25 /CNW/ - IPICO Inc. (TSX-V:RFD) ("IPICO" or the
"Company") is pleased to report that EM Microelectronic ("EM"), the
semiconductor company of the Swatch Group of Marin, Switzerland, has to date
shipped over 250 million Tag-Talks-Only (TTO) UHF RFID chips. These chips are
based on IPICO's powerful IP-X technology platform and have been developed in
collaboration with EM. According to EM (see EM Microelectronic press release
dated January 23, 2008 -
http://www.emmicroelectronic.com/DetailNews.asp?IdNews=114), the largest
portion of these tags is used in the manufacture of intelligent labels for
garment tagging in the fashion industry. This includes Marks & Spencer, which
uses them to improve their clothing in-store stock levels in what is widely
recognized as the world's largest item-level tagging project, thereby
establishing a de-facto standard in this field.
Other than UHF chips, IPICO and EM also developed IP-X based chips in the
dual frequency band, including chips with advanced features such as read/write
memory, battery assisted and tamper detect functionality. These are used in a
wide variety of applications and challenging "real world" environments that
range from the relatively simple to the highly complex.
"We are extremely pleased with the success of our collaboration with EM,
whose deployment further demonstrates the reliability, cost effectiveness and
scalability of the IP-X based chip," said Gordon Westwater, IPICO President.
"Still, we are even more excited by this major endorsement of IPICO's
technology platform and of its increasing commercial success, not only across
the retail sector but also for our solutions in Electronic Vehicle
Identification, Paper and Packaging, Sports Timekeeping, Returnable Plastic
Containers, and in other extreme environment applications."
IPICO Inc.: IPICO Inc. is an RFID solution supplier with operations in
Canada, USA, South Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. IPICO produces smart
labels and tags based on the IP-X communication protocol. IPICO's low
interference readers are designed to meet regulatory requirements in many
major markets, and allow for multi-reader rollout in close proximity. IPICO's
low cost RFID products excel at long read range, fast multi-read
anti-collision and high thru-beam read-speeds of dynamic tag populations.
These products are used to optimize the management of items, people, animals
and processes within the logistic supply chain and other value chains. For
