IPICO provides EVI taxi solution in Latin America

BURLINGTON, ON, Feb. 18 /CNW/ - IPICO Inc. (TSX-V: RFD) is pleased to
announce the commercial deployment of its UHF Passive RFID Electronic Vehicle
Identification (EVI) solution for the management, control and rationalization
of Bogota, Columbia's city registered taxi pool. This deployment for Bogota's
Traffic and Transport office, Secretaria de Movilidad (Secretary of Mobility)
enables regulators to differentiate between officially registered and
controlled taxis and illegal unregistered vehicles. Using both fixed and high
performance handheld readers, taxi regulators and police focus on strategic
areas across the city where taxis tend to operate, such as around the harbour,
airport and bus terminals to identify and deal with illegal taxis. Under the
terms of this contract IPICO supplied a total of 60 high performance handheld
readers, 13 fixed readers and 60,000 tags for the initial phase of the project
that is now in operation.
Many jurisdictions around the world face the challenge of managing
unlicensed or unregistered taxis and other forms of public transport, which
not only fail to pay applicable fees and taxes, but which also pose a threat
to passenger safety and other local standards. The IPICO solution has been
welcomed by both taxi operators and customers, because it improves the image
of the legitimate taxi and offers a safer and more reliable mode of public
"The issue of how to identify unregistered or unlicensed vehicles -
whether taxis, cars, trucks or motorcycles - is a huge problem across South
America and throughout the emerging world," said Gordon Westwater, President
and CEO of IPICO. "We believe that our system provides a very reliable, cost
effective solution that can address this problem almost anywhere and, once
installed, can be managed locally across any geographic region."
